Best Times to Visit and Climate Overview
Bhutan’s climate varies greatly by region and season. The country has four seasons: Spring (Mar–May), Summer/Monsoon (Jun–Aug), Autumn (Sep–Nov), and Winter (Dec–Feb). The southern foothills are subtropical (15–30°C year-round), central valleys (e.g. Thimphu, Paro) are temperate (warm summers, cool winters), and the northern Himalayas are alpine (snowy peaks year-round).
- Spring (Mar–May): Dry, mild to warm days (15–20°C) and cool nights. Flowers (rhododendrons) bloom, making it a botanist’s delight. Good for trekking and festivals (e.g. Paro and Thimphu Tsechus).
- Monsoon (Jun–Aug): Heavy rains, especially south of Bhutan. Lush green landscapes but frequent showers and occasional landslides (carry rain gear).
- Autumn (Sep–Nov): Clear, sunny days and cool nights. Considered the best travel season: dry weather, good visibility, and major festivals (Thimphu and Paro Tsechus) take place.
- Winter (Dec–Feb): Dry and sunny but cold at altitude. Frost and snow are common above 3000 m even in valleys like Thimphu daytime highs are ~5–15°C. Ideal for crisp mountain views and cultural experiences (fewer crowds).
Best Months to Visit: Late Spring (Mar–Apr) and Autumn (late Sep–Nov), when skies are clear and weather mild. (If you enjoy festivals, check the dates of major tshechus.) Monsoon season is least popular for tourists due to rain.
